South Gippsland Café Granted state-of-the-art Gourmet Grill
Victoria, August 5th, 2014: Korumburra locals and visitors are in for a treat – including an expanded gourmet menu and faster service – next time they visit Lucy May’s Café & Bar (www.lucymayscafe.com.au), whose namesake owner just won the fourth national “wish” in BizCover’s $60,000 Small Business Buddy program.
This latest $2,000 grant will pay for a much-wanted new flat grill at Lucy May’s Café, which according to owner Lucy May Mertens says will allow for much safer, quicker, cleaner and more energy efficient cooking. The grill chosen is deemed an essential to help a busy commercial kitchen in precisely cooking steaks, eggs, bacon or hamburgers.
“This BizCover Small Business Buddy wish has given us an instant opportunity to expand and enhance our menu enormously. I strive to continually introduce new meals to satisfy our regular customers and attract new customers. Our team has been wishing for a flat grill for a year now and thought this wonderful Small Business Buddy Program opportunity may be the answer,” explains Ms Mertens.
Ms Mertens opened Lucy May’s Café in Korumburra, South Gippsland in May 2011, at just 21 years of age. Back then, they primarily catered for coffee, cake and lunches, but quickly expanded the menu to include an all-day breakfast selection, daily specials and a wide range of sweet and savoury delicacies.
Today, Lucy May’s Café & Bar also offer a catering service and have a licensed bar. In the past 12 months, the business has grown significantly, with daily takings increasing by 200%, also resulting in new staff hires. The new grill will expand Ms Merten’s business growth even further in 2015, she states.
Launched in June, BizCover Founder and Managing Director Michael Gottlieb has dedicated $60,000 towards the new Small Business Buddy Program (www.smallbusinessbuddy.com.au), in a feel-good mission to give back to the SME community who they service.
“Our success is due to the small business community, who have over the past seven years embraced our online insurance services over more traditional methods of buying insurance,” said Gottlieb, who adds BizCover have 25,000 small business customers across 2,000 plus occupations ranging from dog walkers to hairdressers to café owners and IT consultants.
Ms Mertens has always had a passion for baking and was making breakfast for her parents from age nine.
After several hospitality jobs, it was after completing her Diploma of Hospitality Management Lucy took the leap and opened her café and so far, so good.
This Small Business Buddy Wish adds to the other significant achievements by Lucy May’s Café & Bar in the past three years: including being one of four finalists in the Hospitality category in the Bendigo Bank Gippsland Business Awards 2013 and being named one of four finalists in the 2014 Smart Start Up Business Awards.
“Having someone like Lucy May Materen be able to literally change her already thriving café business overnight with a $2000 grant is precisely what the Small Business Buddy Program is about,” said Gottlieb.
Ms Merterns added: “I believe one of the keys to a successful business is thinking outside the square and
offering services unique to your business. Lucy May’s Café is my life and my passion. My Cafe is a bright
beacon at the top of the hill in our country town. It is a cheerful, happy café which attracts and draws in
many travellers and has a loyal following of locals.”
