Life changing moment for Camden Pest Controller Bizcover.com.au announces first winner of ‘Small Business Buddy Program’

Sydney, June 20, 2014: Like many Australian small business operators Camden resident Darren Falls, Founder of Falls Pest Control (www.fallspestcontrol.com.au) has faced many ups and downs on the road to success.

This week Darren’s load just got that bit lighter as he wins the first $2,000 grant, to buy a new pump, thanks to Bizcover’s Small Business Buddy Program (www.smallbusinessbuddy.com.au).

“Falls Pest Control has been struggling using a small, outdated chemical pump which limits our ability to work faster and on bigger jobs. A new pump will nearly double the amount of pest control jobs I can do in a day, and working on larger customers will hopefully help grow my business by up to 40 per cent by the end of the year,” said Darren.

“I have never won anything before, so I was shocked to find out I was the winner of the first Small Business Buddy wish. The new pump, hose and fittings costs almost $2000, money we just don’t have ourselves right now having only started up earlier this year.”

Launched this month, BizCover Founder and Managing Director Michael Gottlieb has dedicated $60,000 towards the new Small Business Buddy Program (www.smallbusinessbuddy.com.au), in a feel-good mission to give back to the SME community who they service.

“Our success is due to the small business community, who have over the past seven years have embraced our online insurance services over more traditional methods of buying insurance,” said Gottlieb, who adds BizCover have 25,000 small business customers across 2,000 plus occupations ranging from dog walkers to bookkeepers to café owners and IT consultants,

“Having someone like Darren be able to literally change his business capacity overnight with a $2,000 grant is precisely what the Small Business Buddy Program is about,” said Gottlieb.

The 199 wishes submitted so far include numerous requests for laptops and iPads, as well as morale- boosting grants for office coffee machines or staff lunch celebrations.

Darren has bounced back after a tough few years, including battling depression following a car accident involving his daughter in 2010. He says his life got better once he joined the the government’s New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) program through Centrelink and Mission Australia, and was encouraged to submit his wish to the inaugural BizCover Small Business Buddy Program.

“The NEIS program has got me back on track and even though I have obtained many necessary tools the price of the pump was just out of reach for my budget,” said Darren.

Arie Moses, President of the National NEIS Association says success stories like Darren’s are at the core of what the Federal government program strives for. Operating since 1985, NEIS is Australia’s longest running and most successful employment programme.

“NEIS is designed to take Australians like Darren Falls from unemployment to self-employment through accredited small business training, business advice and mentoring, as well as ongoing income support for up to a year.” said Mr Moses.

Falls Pest Control is currently a sole trader business operating on a mobile basis, servicing customers across Sydney’s west, Blue Mountains, Illawarra and Wollongong area’s seven days a week. To help build a customer base Darren currently advertises on social media and using SEO. Darren is expecting to grow his sales by 40% this year and possibly put on another technician by the end of 2015.

“The best thing about being a business owner is being able to organise my time more efficiently to spend time with my family but we do face challenges in areas like account keeping, how to manage if I get sick and keeping up with the insurance and legal requirements of the industry.”

A wish will be granted by Bizcover.com.au every fortnight in the form of a specific product or service valued at up to $2000. Wishes can be made by any small business with twenty employees. Businesses must have a valid ABN to apply but don’t need to be an existing BizCover customer to enter.
